Active Abilities

Backstab
Damage to a single target.

Battle Spirit
All allies on the same tile receive a temporary bonus to physical damage.

Blink
Moves the caster to the target tile.

Chain Lightning
Deals Air damage to all targets on a single tile.

Cleansing Light
Dispels one random negative effect from all allies on the same tile.

Crush
Makes a melee attack that cannot be blocked and that may inflict Stun against all targets on a single tile.

Crystal Cage
Moves all targets on a single tile to an adjacent tile and Roots them there until they break the cage.

Crystal Cage (Explosive)
Moves all targets on a single tile to an adjacent tile and Roots them there until they either break the cage or three turns have passed. If the latter, the cage will deal damage to all targets on the same tile.

Crystal Shards

Crystal Shell

Overwhelming Assault
Makes a melee attack against a single target that cannot be blocked, bypasses any damage resistance or mitigation effects, and removes all of the target's Block attempts.

Pacification
Inflicts Sleep on a single target.

Petrification
Inflicts Paralyze on a single target.

Poison Spit
Deals Earth damage to a single target and inflicts Poison.

Purge
Dispels one random beneficial effect from the party.

Regeneration (Active)
Heals all targets on a single tile, they continue to be healed on the next couple of turns.

Regrowth
Heals a single target, it continues to be healed on the next couple of turns.

Searing Light
Light damage to a single target.

Shadow Bolt
Dark damage to a single target.

Stone Skin

Passive Abilities

Boss
Immune to Mana Surge, Sleep, Terror, Poison, Root, Push and Stasis effects.

Curling
Sometimes gets a free movement action.

Cursing Strikes
Physical attacks have a chance to inflict Curse and Criticals will always inflict it.

Debilitating Strikes
Physical attacks have a chance to inflict Feeblemind and Criticals will always inflict it.

Demonic Lineage
Damage increases as Health decreases, incoming Light damage is increased by 25%.

Enraged
Attack number is doubled at 50% or less Health.

Explosive
On death deals 100 unpreventable damage to all enemies within melee range.

Focused
Immune to Mana Surge, Provoke, Sleep and Terror effects.

Large
Immune to Push and Root effects, takes +25% damage from and loses 10 Evade against Spears.

Mana Leech
Dealing damage to a target will drain their Mana by a set amount.

Martyr
On death, all allies on the same tile receive a temporary bonus to melee/ranged attack and melee/ranged/spell damage.

Pain Reflection
If damaged by an attacker in melee range, said attacker will suffer 20% of the damage dealt.

Piercing Strikes
Physical attacks have a chance to ignore any Armor or damage resistance or mitigation effects and Criticals will always ignore them.

Poisoning Strikes
Physical attacks have a chance to inflict Poison and Criticals will always inflict it.

Push
Physical attacks may move the target onto an adjacent tile.

Regeneration (Passive)
Heals 5% Max Health each turn.

Relentless
Each attack that hits increases the damage of any following attacks by 15% for the rest of that turn.

Retaliation
If attacked with a melee attack, makes one free melee attack in response.

Speed of Light
Can take multiple actions each turn.

Spirit Bound
Prevents enemies from moving out of melee range.

Static Object
Cannot attack or be affected by any Status Effects.

Stunning Strikes
Physical attacks have a chance to inflict Stun and Criticals will always inflict it.

Sweeping Attack

Recommended Progression for Warrior Difficulty

Generally try to reach cities ASAP, as they provide training, which greatly improves your party's survivability. Dangerous Caves can generally be dealt with safely after level 20.

Always try to complete all possible quests before moving on to the next point.

  1. Sorpigal, Spider Lair (of course).
    Quests: Looking for Work, Spiders in the Well, Smuggler's Cove.
  2. Tirya Bay, Shadow Woods east and Ashen Hills, except the Spectres in front of Cursed Ruins and both Dangerous Caves. If playing with the Mod, you can also visit Seahaven, but don't venture anywhere else.
    Quest: Flowers for Fallen Heroes.
  3. Den of Thieves (but don't collect the Mysterious Book to keep Rosalie for Lighthouse).
    Quest: The Highwaymen.
  4. Lighthouse (generally Mamushi and even Lighthouse level 3 are much harder than the whole Den of Thieves). Now you have to collect the Mysterious Book from DoT to progress further.
    Quest: Darkness in the Lighthouse.
  5. Castle Portmeyron (if your party lacks Freemage, return with Spike Hireling or enough Whispering Shadow scrolls to explore hidden areas. Remember this for every dungeon until you get Dark Blessing).
    Quest: The Rocky Road to Portmeyron.
  6. Elemental Forge, get Earth Blessing (but avoid Air and Light Elementals lurking at the end of long corridors).
    Quest: Elemental Disturbance.
  7. Seahaven (up to now it was pretty much linear, but now there are many choices).
    Quests: none.
  8. Navea Plains and Yon-Chall Forest (and north of The Eye), except the Poacher's camp area with Spike, and the Dangerous Cave.
    Quests: Haart has its Reasons, Morgan's Eyes and Ears, The Search for Kilburn, Peninsula Incognita.
  9. Minho Marshes (only 2 fights here, but very long and tough, expect to spend a lot of potions, but at least the enemies here don't heal).
    Quests: none.
    Now is the hardest decision. All accessible areas can be deadly. Your best bet probably is:
  10. Lost City, except level 3. From level 2 go directly to level 4, and on both levels, skip the areas near stairs to level 3. Get the Shard of Water from level 4.
    Quests: The Hunt for Montbard, The Last Wish.
  11. Water Blessing – getting it this early is mainly for convenience, so you can freely explore The Crag and Karthal Slums, and get the GM Arcane Discipline quest – but do not yet venture to difficult areas such as Dubra Scrubland, Vantyr Range, Wyslin Jungle, Irisus/Savage Seas or Shipwrecks.
    Quests: none.
  12. The Crag – take the shortest route through Halloth Grove (no fights) and Desolate Wilds (2 fights).
    Quests: Pirate Truce, GM Water Magic.
  13. Desolate Wilds (but skip the GM Warfare quest, and the Dangerous Cave).
    Quests: Fallen Star, GM Arcane Discipline (start).
  14. Karthal Sewers and Falagar's Mansion. Take the shortest route from Desolate Wilds through the south of Navea Delta, avoiding most fights there. You get Shard of Light from Falagar's Mansion (you can get the Light Blessing now, but it's unnecessary, as you will get it later together with all the other Blessings).
    Quests: Morgan's Informant (completed by entering Karthal Harbor), Lost Lambs.
  15. Karthal Harbor and Slums (you may delay transferring Kaspar to The Crag until you deal with Falagar later, since you can't complete The Curse now anyway, so you avoid additional cost and backtracking).
    Quests: Ashes to Ashes, The Sewer Key, Promotion to Druid Elder. (with Mod: Lost in Glory)
    After exploring Karthal, dealing with all the quests and trainings, your party generally becomes much stronger, so from now on the risk of death is low. The order is not so important anymore – you should be able to deal with almost anything from now on.
  16. Navea Delta and south of The Eye (you can also do the Shadow Woods Mysterious Crypt without fighting through the rest of the woods), Tower of Enigma, Halloth Grove.
    Quests: The Naga Tea (if playing with the Mod, you can now kill the Shadow Dragon in Ashen Hills' DC and finish Fantastic Golems).
  17. Vantyr Range west: hire Vilma (better to have her before you loot the chest in the north).
    Quests: none.
    Bodyguard Vilma improves party's overall survivability a lot, meaning the rest of the game is not that challenging anymore – except the part in which you don't have her: Fort Laegaire.
  18. All available Dangerous Caves (from now on you can tackle Dangerous Caves as you come by them), Poacher's camp (if no Freemage, hire Spike, backtrack to dungeons for hidden areas), GM Warfare quest.
    Quests: GM Warfare, Promotion to Warden.
  19. Seas and Shipwrecks: Tirya Bay Shipwreck, Shadow Woods west, Dubra Scrubland and Shipwreck (barrels), Irisus Sea and Shipwreck, Savage Sea and Shipwreck (Sunhind).
    Quests: none.
  20. Skull Rock – you get 4 important quest items here: Blackfang's Chest for Partners in Crime, San Tenga Mugen for Sword of the Bounty Hunter, Yumiko's bow for GM Bow, and Shard of Air for Forge of Heroes.
    Quests: Sword of the Bounty Hunter, GM Bow, Partners in Crime, The Great Escape.
  21. Karthal Jail (Shard of Darkness) & HQ, and rest of the Sewers. You will need to fire Vilma briefly to make room for Falagar. Then use the free Hireling spot to transfer Kaspar for The Curse. You can also use it to buy rare elixirs from Nahla and Rabican (with Mod) – you need to have at least 8100 / 41200 gold respectively. Then re-hire Vilma.
    Quests: Liberation, Promotion to Archmage.
  22. Lost City level 3 (Shard of Fire), including stair areas on levels 2 and 4.
    Quest: The Curse.
  23. All the remaining Blessings (Light, Air, Fire, Dark). Don't forget to loot the chest and barrel on Elemental Forge level 4.
    Quest: Forge of Heroes.
  24. Wyslin Jungle (and Owl Cave), Menthil Coast (you can keep Edwin if you like, but it is not that important as you will need to get rid of him before Battle of Karthal anyway, if you prefer Vilma).
    Quests: Dunstan, Promotion to Bloodcaller, Promotion to Marauder, GM Sword, Receding Horizons (optional).
  25. Temple of Meow, Vantyr Range. With the map explored, you can get the obelisks treasure, and the Dragon Shrines Relic.

Choices

There aren't many dialog choices, and even the few present mostly don't matter, as the game evolves the same regardless. Still, you might want to know what to choose and what are the consequences, either gameplay-wise or story-wise.

Lost Lambs

By letting them go, you are losing some experience (Luke-100 XP, Kirk-150 XP, Ripley-200 XP) and possibly some items and gold. Story-wise, you shall let go Luke and Kirk, and only kill Ripley. If you let Ripley go, he kills his own mother. The other two manage to redeem themselves somehow, if you let them go.

Haart has its Reasons

Story-wise, you shall not betray Haart to the Inquisition (tell mostly the truth). Gameplay-wise, if you don't hurry with training for GM Sword, it's better to betray him (tell the truth), since GM Sword quest is very easy 400 XP. You get no quest from Carla if Lord Haart is available.

The Curse of Volos

There is no difference whether or not you believe Kasia except her immediate reply, though you should probably believe her.

Battle of Karthal

By answering Salvin "for a little girl", he commits suicide and you lose out an elixir, some items and 250 XP. Other choices lead to battle with him.

Markus Wolf

In The Vigil level 1, you can choose to kill him or just stun him. If you kill him, it is finished, you get no more XP. If you want more story, you shall let him live. In that case, you meet him again in Fort Laegaire level 2. Here you can choose to leave him in his cell or let him join you. By letting him join you, he later almost kills Rosalie and then gets himself killed. Leaving him in the cell is the only way he stays alive, and you don't put Rosalie to danger. Story-wise, this is probably the best choice. Gameplay-wise, these choices don't matter at all.

Loose Ends

As there are no respawns, you reach maximum level 38 (40 with Mod) at the end of the game and DLC (with +XP Hireling). That means you have exactly 37*3 + 4 (starting) = 115 skill points to spare (117 for Humans), of which 2 are fixed. Obviously those spent towards the end have little to no significance, as the game ends. That means you will never be able to "max out" your characters' skills. Just saying :-)

Types of Equipment

The following equipment types are recognized: One-handed magical focus is called Wand, two-handed is Staff; Light Armor is Garment. Broken or unidentified items always sell for 5 gold. Note that you can throw away items by dragging them out of inventory space.

Base Stats

Armor and Shields have Armor stat, in addition Medium and Heavy Armors have negative Attack penalty. Weapons have Damage range and Critical chance; for Magical Foci, the Critical chance applies to spells cast by the user – they always hit in melee. Rings and Necklaces have no base stats, so they are only good for sale if white.

Potions & Elixirs

Potions come in 2 varieties and 5 sizes. They restore certain amount of Health (Health potions, red) or Mana (Mana potions, blue). Common elixirs cure status conditions (Clarity: Feebleminded, Fortifying: Weakness, Antidote: Poison). Potions and common elixirs are sold in Magic shops or by Nahla, the Apotheracy hireling.

Rare elixirs improve character stats (Health: +5 max Health, Mana: +5 max Mana, Vitality: +1 Vitality, Spirit: +1 Spirit, Arcane Resistance: +1 all resistances, Potency: +1 Might +1 Magic +1 Perception +1 Destiny +1 Vitality +1 Spirit) or restore character's both Mana and Health to max (Restoration elixir). Rare elixirs are only rarely sold (see below), they are mostly provided as a reward for defeating tough enemies or champions.

Scrolls & Spells

Scrolls can be bought in Magic shops or found. They are ranked as Expert, Master or Grandmaster, immitating the effect of a spell on given rank. Scrolls do not require mana, and can be used by anyone. They are consumed after usage.

Spells are never found, they can only be bought in Libraries, or provided as starting (1 spell for each magic school). Spells are written into character's spellbook upon purchase to be used repeatedly. They require skill level in given magic school (Novice, Expert, Master, or Grandmaster) and cost mana. Spells cannot be sold.

ACIDCAVE MOD

This mod will enhance the gameplay, and you will be able to reach level 40-41 with it. Download it from the acidcave.net site, or use direct link. In short: 4 new quests, 2 new hirelings, all unlocks, many bugfixes. This mod works with only English or Polish languages. WARNING: Stop reading if you want no spoilers.

The biggest change

All locations and promotion quests are available, no matter race or class of party members. For example, you can play with a party of 4 Barbarians and still get into the Temple of Ylath, Sacred Grove or Sudgerd, and complete promotion quests for all other classes. This means you are getting 12x experience just from promotion quests. If you don't agree with this change, then simply ignore promotion quests for classes not in your party.

Since the experience reward for promotion quests is lowered from 1500 to 1000, this change provides 6000 additional experience, plus all the experience bonuses associated with promotions to Shieldguard (Davros-200), Pathfinder (2x Griffin, 3x Elite Air Elemental-260), and Warmonger (Pao Kai-350).

New Quests

This mod offers 4 new quests, providing a total of 6000 additional experience for your party, 12 scrolls, 2 Potency Elixirs, and Relic Necklace.

Jasaad's Bestiary quest progress

This quest also rewards experience and gold for completing 10, 20, 30, 40 monsters and returning to Jasaad. Previously only 50 monsters provided rewards. This provides 1900 additional experience.
